RE: Campgrounds or parks around the Oregon Dalles area?

Thanks for the replies, we decided to set up camp a few miles to the west in Hood River which will still allow lots of day trips to local attractions.

RE: Recommended route through Oregon... I-5 or Hwy 97?

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, they were very helpful. The way it looks now, we'll be spending the first few nights at Bridge RV in Hood River. That will give us a few days to do some scenic day driving around the gorge area as well as visiting some local wineries. Then we'll head south on 35 to 26 then on to 97 where will detour for a few nights at the Mountain Shadow RV park near Sisters, assuming they are "more in the woods" than anything around Bend. The Diamond Lake campground sounds like a nice place to spend a few more days before heading south. Someone asked... "where next?", well, we're eventually heading back home in Ft. Worth, Texas but want to spend some time in eastern Utah and Durango, Colorado first so a general southeast trek is our goal. Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Campgrounds or parks around the Oregon Dalles area?

We're looking at staying in the Dalles area of Oregon for a few days and a local winery owner recommended the "Horse Thief" and "Peach Beach campgrounds to us. I can't find anything on either park in any guide I use. Does anyone know of these campground or any other park they would recommend in the area? We have a 37' fifth wheel so we won't fit into some of the smaller sites at state parks.

Recommended route through Oregon... I-5 or Hwy 97?

I'm not sure where to put this so excuse me if it's in the wrong forum. Right now we're in Prosser, Washington and have been told the Columbia river gorge area is a scenic drive so plan on taking Hwy 97 down to the Dalles area where we will stay while visiting some local wineries. When we depart, I'm thinking of taking Hwy 197 south through Maupin to Hwy 97 then all the way to Klamath Falls before turning east on Hwy 140. We did the 101 coastline drive two years ago and are looking for another nice scenic drive through the state and thought Hwy 97 would provide more scenery than taking I-5. Any local folks have any "must see" destinations or campgrounds of if you were travelling through the state, which route would you take? We tow a 37' fifth wheel so stops at state parks are pretty much out of the question due to our length but really enjoy driving through the tall pines and mountains when possible. Any suggestions appreciated.

RE: Taking two truck spaces at Flying J

Here we go again! So I guess you've never overnighted in a travel center, rest stop or Wal-Mart then texatDurango? How good for you. Being retired may open your schedule up a bit but what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. Mike, You are correct in assuming I have never spent the night in a parking lot of any kind... even when I was working so being retired has nothing to do with anything. Having a free night on the road is NOT the issue here, it's common courtesy, plain and simple! To remind you of what was said in the original post, here is what caught my eye and to me is what the issue is here.... "we take up two parking spaces. And, actually, our bedroom slide is right on the edge of a third spot." Regardless whether the lot had 30+ spaces open at 10 or 11 PM is meaningless, I have seen these places fill up at three in the morning. Truckers aren't like the average RV'er, they drive when they can even if it means the wee hours of the morning and to make a judgement on lane availability at 11 PM is poor judgement in my opinion. The idea of KNOWINGLY taking up two full slots, and possibly a third is what I took acception to. Putting out a slide isn't even remotely similar to setting out chairs, a mat, your awning, BBQ, etc. The slides are part of the vehicle and in many cases must be extended for the vehicle to be usable. This is armchair arguing nonsense! Letting out the slides is the same as letting out an awning or sitting out a grill if it encroaches on another parking lane. Mike

RE: Taking two truck spaces at Flying J

Thank you all so much for your input. I am a gentle person so I especially appreciated the gentle responses. We did make it through the night. A trucker skillfully pulled in next to us with 18 - 24" inches to spare. Why he chose to do that rather than taking one of the thirty empty spaces, I don't know. And, yes, many circumstances lead to parking somewhere other than a campground. This particular one was not due to poor planning -- just that we didn't want to pull into a campground late at night and disturb others. This particular one was not due to poor planning -- just that we didn't want to pull into a campground late at night and disturb others. Thanks again! So this was a planned event? Wow, what next.... "Should I put out a sign saying my patio carpet is out so trucks won't run over it and get it dirty?" :?

RE: Pass Elevations

SA 2009+ does not give the pass names or elevations. Is there a mapping program that gives that information? I agree that Delorme's Topo is a good choice and the paper copy of the Mountain Directory is nice to carry along. I was fortunate to buy my Mountain Directory when you could still get the electronic version. I have seen the paper copy at Camping Worlds. What these two sources will tell you is not only how steep the grade is but how long it is, which is more important than just knowing the elevation. I think some folks need to consider that while on the road, MOST places don't afford fast enough internet sources to allow programs like Google earth to work well! When planning my trip on the road, I often will run Topo USA to check the grades OR run the Mountain Directory to see what routes will encounter steep grades.

RE: trailer saver air pressure

I have the 32k 6k pin Trailer Saver on my c6500. I was wondering what pressure the bags should be at? Thanks I agree with a few others in that there is no "Correct" pressure. I have the in-cab gage where I can release air or add more to the bags while driving and will quite often release pressure when on bouncy roads because the trailer starts porpoising too much and it actually makes towing worse. I usually fill the bags to around 45psi THEN hitch up which puts me pretty close to "the mark". Sure is easier and quicker filling the bags without all the weight on them. I would suggest trying different pressure settings and see what is most comfortable to you.

RE: HH CKRSB or Select Suites 34RLSB3

Something I don't understand, you are comparing the most expensive "luxury" model of Hitchhiker to the cheapest "economy" model Doubletree trailer. Having previously owned a Hitchhiker and now a Mobile Suites, I find what you are doing is comparing a Cadillac to a Ford Pinto! When I toured the DOubletree factory I got some good looks at the Select Suites and would be more apt to compare them to the Hitchhiker II series trailers rather than the Champagne. Just something I noticed.

Campgrounds or attactions in Northeast Oregon

In late August we will be returning from a trip up into central Washington, probably taking Hwy 84 down through Eastern Oregon. We're not in any hurry, anything come to mind that we might want to see or checkout? Sure would be nice to find some high altitude camprgound where we could relax under the trees for a few days.

RE: Highway 95 in Idaho - Scenic or not?

It's a nice ride......but it is HOT in the canyon... That's one thing I realized when I started routing the trip. I think since we are coming out of Washington, we well go down through eastern Oregon instead. Looks like a little higher elevations and possible a bit cooler. Thanks for the ideas

Highway 95 in Idaho - Scenic or not?

Hi all, we're heading up into Northern Idaho and Washington next week and on the way back thought about taking Highway 95 from Lewiston, Idaho heading South towards Boise. My mountain directory warns about several steep grades and I try to avoid 7% grades if possible but can manage them if needed. In you opinion, is this a scenic area making the grades worthwhile? Also, it's only around 250 miles from Lewiston to Boise, are there any nice campgrounds in-between on Hwy 95 that might be a nice overnight stay? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. George

Tiffan customer support

We are currently shopping around for a motorhome and as of this morning, think the decision will be between the Tiffin Phaeton 40QSH and the Allegro bus 40QRP. The biggest problem is deciding between the two and rationalizing spending the difference between them. After speaking with many salespeople, ones head starts to swim trying to seperate reality from sales jargon so I pose a question for those who have experience with this brand. Is the Tiffin customer service really as good, and are these coaches really as trouble free as I'm being led to believe?

RE: My Rig is lb 16,800 What truck will live up to this weight

I don't think that a 1 ton will make it across the country and back pulling its Max towing rate any ideals for a bigger tow truck or have anybody been pulling alot of weight across the country with a 1 ton what kind any problems overheating in the summer, If you are convinced that a 1 ton truck can't handle the weight it's designed to tow then by all means don't get one. But, I think you're under estimating these trucks. http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL564/493883/9292488/198650657.jpg height=400 We took the above trip around the country last year with the truck and trailer shown below. No problems, no overheating, no creeping along mountain grades, no braking problems, no white knuckle situations... just had a nice trip, averaged almost 11 mpg overall towing, met lots of nice people, took lots of photos, ate lots of good food and drank some great wine. And THAT is what having an RV is all about, not worrying about being 10 pounds over this or that or listening to some big truck guy trying to scare you to death for not doing what he wants you to do. To each their own!

RE: albuquerque balloon festival

... Besides, if you don't have reservations elsewhere, you won't get them now. See ya there. No Kidding! We called in January wanting to make returning reservations in the VIP area. No luck, all sold out. They said this has never happened before, having a sellout in January! Have fun!
